A recent conversion of the stone barn at Meadshaw Farm, the cottage accommodates up to four people. There is a double bedroom, a mezzanine bedroom with 2 single beds, shower room, utility room with washing machine and dishwasher, and a wonderfully light and airy kitchen/dining room with mezzanine bedroom above. The kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons (including remote controlled blinds). It has a dining area and comfy seating area with freeview TV, DVD, CD and (slow) internet connection. There is no mobile phone connection in the immediate area. Throughout the cottage, the natural stone floors are cosy and warm underfoot, heated by an external log burning boiler which also heats the nearby farmhouse, and provides as much hot water as you want.
The Shepherds Hut
Is next to the cottage, and provides a unique extra space, for relaxing or even to spend the night should you wish! With the wood-burning stove lit, it is toasty warm. A ready supply of logs and kindling will be available for your stay. The seating in the shepherds’ hut converts to a comfy extra-large single bed. It is simply furnished, and accessed by wooden steps.
Provided for you
All linen/towels, heating and logs for the shepherds hut are included, as well as charcoal for your BBQ. Free range organic eggs are provided in the cottage, along with produce from our garden (when in season).
There is a paved seating area with lovely views of the hills and the river below. Next to the cottage is a large cattle court containing 3 stables, and there are several fenced fields below the cottage. There is also an under cover BBQ and seating area housed in the old hay barn opposite the cottage, which can be used if the weather is wet. There is also plenty of parking. Visitors are also welcome to explore the farm, and picnic on the river bank.
We live 15 metres away in Meadshaw Farmhouse, and are on hand to give advice if required, but are equally happy to leave you to enjoy the peace and quiet, this
being one of those rare places where you will hear no traffic noise and see only the stars at night.
Holiday with your Horse
Located directly on the Roman and Reivers Horse Riding Route. Stabling and paddocks for your horse are available right next to the cottage. With miles of riding from your door, either guided or with maps, you and your horse will be in “horsey heaven”. There is plenty of parking (and turning space) for your trailer or lorry. Well behaved pets are welcome. Luggage transfers can be arranged if you want to ride to stay at one of the other “Ride Borders” horse and rider destinations.
We are an established family business with years of equestrian experience so you can feel confident your needs will be catered for. Riding suitable for all levels – from gentle forest tracks to routes across the rolling hills of the Borders. Take your horse for a paddle or swim in the Borthwick Water!
For cyclists, horse riders and walkers, Meadshaw Forest joins up with nearby 10,000 acre Craik Forest and there are miles of forest tracks to explore from your door – try following the old drove road up past Broadlea Loch, and on to the village of Roberton. Further afield, more mountain biking is available at Innerliethen, Glentress (Peebles), Newcastleton and Kielder Water.
Hawick, the local woollen mill town is 10 miles away. It has restaurants, supermarkets and shops, a leisure centre and a lovely cinema, cafe and heritage centre. Hawick is known for its cashmere shops, its tradition of rugby and the annual Common Riding Festival. For a day out, you can visit one of the beautiful Border Abbey towns, such as Jedburgh or Melrose, or take the scenic 1.5 hour drive to Edinburgh by car. The new Borders railway will get you to Edinburgh in under an hour from Galashiels.
At Meadshaw Farm we are working towards environmentally friendly living.
All white goods at the cottage are A rated or better, cleaning and washing products provided are plant-based, heating/hot water is fuelled by local, sustainably managed woodland and the garden and farm are managed without commercial fertilisers.
